I've found the blunt weapon stun to be invaluable in breaking up groups. If you're standing there hacking it'll just get deeper. Your priority should be drinking a beer so you don't get chain stunned and getting back at range and resetting. If you're in the middle of a pack you already screwed up. nsidering I use the sledge on horde nights out on the streets it does just fine.
Seriously tho, Stone axe: build, repair, harvest and high attack speed to stun multiple z. Machete can dismember/stumble 3-4 zombies if u get stun n crowded, gives u half a chance of recovering.
